Death Of Newspapers Might Be Myth
newspaper readers increase says recent report

Mark Twain is credited with saying ‘reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.’  The reality is somewhat different.  Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) wrote to Frank Bliss, May 1897, “The report of my illness grew out of his illness; the report of my death was an exaggeration.”  According to new data from the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), reports of the death of newspapers might be mainly mythical.

WAN Newspaper 2005 VS 2006
  • Global newspaper circulation up 9.95 percent over five years and 2.36 percent over twelve months
  • North America showed a five-year circulation increase of 0.70 percent and was virtually stable over one year
  • Daily newspaper titles surpass 10,000 for first time in history
  • More than 450 million copies sold daily
  • In excess of 1.4 billion paid-newspaper readers
  • Total free daily circulation more than doubles in last five years
According to WAN CEO, Timothy Balding, “Newspapers represent a nearly 180-billion-dollar industry worldwide, with more advertising revenue than radio, outdoor, cinema, magazines, and the internet combined.”
The intersection of technology and printed news can be found in their online editions and the papers’ internal blogs.  Newspapers are enjoying a surge of popularity.  Internal blogs are driving participation by providing instant “Letter to the Editor” and in the form of a blog post.
